Biomass and Solar PV Hybrid Solution Biomass is the fourth most prevalent energy sources after coal, oil and natural gases; and presently supplies for about 14% of the world’s total energy consumption. Palm biomass such as empty fruit bunch and palm kernel shell are identified to contain high heating value which indicates their potential use as solid biomass feeds for Syngas production. Nigeria is the fifth largest palm oil producing country, with 1.5% or 1.03 million metric tonnes of the world’s total output. Also, agriculture contributed around 21.91% to Nigeria’s GDP in 2019. Sadly, most of the palm biomass underutilized is either land filled as waste or left on plantation ground for mulching as organic fertilizer. The initiative to process these palm biomass to become value added downstream product will make use of available efficient processing technology and excellent management. Most times only 10% of palm oil is produced from each of oil palm and the remaining 90% is biomass residue. Palm biomass [fruit bunch and palm kernel shell] presents a solution that is sustainable and eco-friendly. Suffice to note that palm biomass, coal, refinery residual and municipal wastes are types of feedstock that can be used to produce Syngas. Among all, palm biomass offers considerable opportunity of major renewable, sustainable and environmental-friendly energy sources.

Benefits of Project

Empty fruit bunch and palm kernel shell are the residues to be used in the boiler system. Both are suitable for the generation of electricity as Empty fruit bunch have very high volatility and reactivity. Also, Palm kernel shell has quite significant content of volatile matter, a moderate proportion of fixed carbon, but rather low content of fuel moisture and ash, this resulting in high heating value. The electricity generated from this solid feedstock [fruit bunch and palm kernel shell serve as environmental clean fuel characteristic and can be used directly as fuel for power generation. It presents a solution that is sustainable and eco-friendly. palm biomass offers considerable opportunity of major renewable, sustainable and environmental-friendly energy sources.

Solar PV technology implementation will work effectively considering our solar resources which has an average irradiance of  1000 W/m2, peak sun hour of an average of 4hr daily. and Air mass of 1.5

The top 3 problems we identified included
1. Underutilization of waste and products from the production and processing of palm oil from oil palm.

2. The local producers still make use of firewood that releases a lot of toxic emissions that has adverse effect on the health of the workers and our environment.

3. Unsustainable energy source used in the processing of palm oil contributing to the global energy footprint.

1. Utilization of waste as the feed stock for generating clean energy(Syn Gas) generation resulting in a self-sustaining and energy efficient process.

3. Net zero emission plants reducing the carbon footprint of the oil palm producers.

The oil palm industry in Nigeria is a thriving crude industry and with not so much said about it. We at Shobab Energy, we are taking oil palm production to the next level through our innovative self sustaining and energy efficient solution, we will increase the overall oil palm produce by 50%, ease the crude stress of the workers improving their overall livelihood and health, in a highly hygienic production environment, achieve a net zero energy process and drastically reduce the waste in the entire production process and contribute to the national energy grid.
